Remote desktops
Tidegate opens Windows desktops over RDP and other desktops over VNC, next to your terminals.
RDP on Windows
On Windows, an RDP host opens in a tab inside Tidegate. It uses the same Microsoft control as Remote Desktop Connection, so it behaves the same way. The picture follows the size of the window.
In the host editor you set:
- the domain, the screen size (fit the window, or a fixed size) and the colors,
- what to share: clipboard, local drives, printers and smart cards,
- where sound plays,
- under Advanced: Network Level Authentication (on, as recommended) and the admin session.
The tab has buttons for full screen and for sending Ctrl+Alt+Del.
RDP on macOS and Linux
On a Mac, an RDP host opens in Microsoft's free Windows App. On Linux it opens in Remmina. Tidegate writes a small .rdp file with the host's options and hands it to that app.
- The password is never written into that file. The app asks for it.
- The file sits in a private folder and is removed after 10 minutes, and when Tidegate quits.
VNC
A VNC host opens in a tab on every system. Use the display number (host:1) or the port (host::5901).
- A saved VNC password is used by Tidegate itself, so it never reaches the viewer.
- Many VNC servers only listen on the machine itself. Pick Tunnel through SSH host and Tidegate connects through SSH first.
